SOLUGEL®: FAQ
What are bioactive peptides?
Bioactive peptides are defined as peptides in a protein that have a beneficial effect on body functions and/or have a positive influence on human health, in addition to the known nutritional value. These peptides can regulate important body functions through their numerous activities, including satiating effect, pain reduction, skin hydration, elasticity, and firmness, etc.
The bioactivity of collagen peptides refers to its activity in the cells, tissues or in the body to promote potential health benefits proven with (pre)clinical studies. Changes in function and incorporation of amino acids in the tissue, can help to understand the mechanism.
SOLUGEL® collagen peptides are bioactive because the biological activity of them have been tested through clinical (human trials) or preclinical (in vitro bio-chemical assays, cell culture, in vivo animal design) studies.
What is the difference between gelatin and collagen peptides?
Gelatin and collagen peptides are both natural products that are extracted from collagen-rich materials. While gelatin is an ingredient that is typically used as a gelling agent, emulsifier, stabilizer or water binding agent for confectionery, dairy, desserts and pharmaceutical applications, collagen peptides are predominately consumed for the nutritional value and health benefits, as well as easy integration in food and beverages.

gelatin-vs-collagen-peptides.pdfHow are collagen peptides absorbed by the human body?
SOLUGEL® collagen peptides are obtained by breaking down proteins enzymatically into smaller peptides that can be easily absorbed by the human body. Collagen peptides are further hydrolyzed into smaller peptides or even free amino acids along the human digestive tract. They can also easily be absorbed in the intestine.
Tests have proven that SOLUGEL® collagen peptides reach the bloodstream within 15 minutes and are available to exert different functions in target tissues. The presence of peptides reached a maximum level after 1-2 hours and then decreased to one-half of the maximum level 4 hours after the ingestion.

Protein flour: grinded/milled protein source
Protein concentrate: soluble carbohydrates removed
Protein isolate: aqueous extraction & precipitation
Protein hydrolysate: enzymatically treated to smaller peptide chains and free amino acids
Textured protein: fibrous extruded/sheared protein
What type of collagen is SOLUGEL®?
SOLUGEL® mainly consists of collagen type I with some trace elements of collagen type III.
In scientific literature, about 28 different types of collagen are identified. In skin/hide, collagen type I is predominantly present. It is known that collagen type III is also present in most tissues containing type I collagen, however, it is only present in very low amounts compared to the type I collagen.
Is it safe to consume SOLUGEL® collagen peptides?
SOLUGEL® is natural ingredient coming from bovine, porcine or fish raw materials. It does not contain any of the allergenic substances identified by food regulations in the EU (except sulphur dioxide), Brazil, Argentina, USA, and China. It is suitable for diabetics and people who are lactose intolerant.
Furthermore, our manufacturing process complies with food regulations and GMP procedures worldwide. Collagen peptides are recognized as GRAS by the FDA.
SOLUGEL® is considered as natural product in accordance with the standard ISO/TS 19657: 2017 technical specification on definitions and technical criteria. This ISO specification states that a food ingredient can be considered as natural depending on which source material it is made of, and depending on the production process. SOLUGEL® complies with both.
SOLUGEL® is not concerned by EC Regulation 1829/2003, by EC Regulation 1830/2003 and by EC Directive 2001/18/EC because collagen hydrolysates do not consist of, do not contain and are not derived from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
Are there kosher or halal SOLUGEL® collagen peptides?
Yes, we are able to supply kosher and halal SOLUGEL®.
Can I combine SOLUGEL® collagen peptides and other proteins such as whey?
Thanks to the neutral flavor and smell, as well as the excellent dissolution properties, SOLUGEL® can easily be combined with other proteins for your healthy and balanced diets or formulation needs. In fact, you will appreciate the synergy between different proteins as you use them to help realize your sporting and fitness goals.
For example, a shake containing a blend of collagen and whey protein is ideal for pre and post workout for muscle building and tissue protection.
